LOCAL LEGEND

MEET CAPTAIN CHAPPY

Chappy is a Charleston native who fished these creeks before he had a license to drive to them. He spent years on the pro redfish circuit, the Lowcountry Redfish Cup, the Southern Redfish Cup, the IFA Redfish Series, and the Redfish World Series, before he started guiding in 2018. That tournament background is the difference between a guide who hopes the fish are there and one who knows where they live.

WHAT YOU'LL CATCH

What You'll Catch in Charleston

On a private inshore trip through the Lowcountry, the regulars are red drum (the spotted redfish Charleston is known for) and spotted seatrout (speckled trout). Flounder and black drum round out the year. In summer the water fills in with bluefish, ladyfish, jack crevalle, and bonnethead sharks, which is why summer trips with kids stay busy. Slot and over-slot redfish are around all twelve months.

THE FULL EXPERIENCE

Catch and Cook at Shem Creek

Shem Creek is the heart of the Charleston waterfront, which means the fun does not end at the dock. Capt. Chappy cleans your keepers right at the cleaning table on the dock, and the kitchen at Waters Edge Restaurant will cook your catch while you settle in at the Cabana Bar. Rod to plate, a few steps apart.

This is not a fill-the-cooler operation. You can keep a few fish, and Chappy is happy to walk you through realistic expectations on what should and should not go on ice from the estuary.
